Introduced in 1989, the Kawai K4 is a digital synthesizer that combines sampled waveforms, digital synthesis and a resonant digital filter within a flexible and relatively straightforward programming architecture.
Unlike many late-1980s digital synthesizers that focused primarily on realistic instrument emulations, the Kawai K4 is often appreciated for its synthetic character. Its combination of layered waveforms and resonant digital filtering allows the creation of sounds that can be warm and spacious, but also dark, metallic or haunting depending on programming.

The Kawai K4 combines a large library of sampled waveforms with a synthesis structure inspired by traditional subtractive synthesizers. Its DCO–DCF–DCA signal path makes programming relatively intuitive while providing a wide range of sound design possibilities.
Each patch can consist of up to four independent layers which may be edited individually or simultaneously, allowing the creation of complex textures, layered sounds and evolving timbres.
